BIOGRAPHY
Gal Furlan, born in year 1990 (Slovenia). He began to show joy in playing drums as early as at the age of two. He was continously stealing pots from his grandmother and hitting on them with spoons until they bought him a set of small toy drums. When he was nine years old, he started following courses and workshops of African drumming on djembe. He began to gain his knowledge of african drumming from the masters Lucio Cosentino, Abdoulaye Sene and Mamadou Diouf.
Between 2000 and 2004, Gal on djembe performed with a group named Francis' children. They performed at various spiritual meetings and many times at holy mass in Vipavski Križ.
From 1999 to 2007, he took part in the Capoeira Angola course. There he was learning their traditional martial arts or dance, as well as the music that belongs within. In the meantime, twice had a great opportunity to participate in the Mestre Cobra Mansa course, once with Mestre Sapo and many times with Toni Santos - Amexa.
At the age of eleven, he attended music school in Ajdovščina. When he was twelve, the well-known Jazz drummer and percussionist Zlatko Kaučič took him in his school of drumming in Nova Gorica. Gal's education with Zlatko was completed in 2006. He worked with Zlatko's group Kombo (later Kombo A) regularly from year 2002 until 2013 and with group Kombo B casualy from year 2013 till the end of 2016. They mostly performed in Slovenian stages, and occasionally also abroad. Up to now Gal has collaborated on 5 CDs with Zvočni izviri society, led by Zlatko Kaučič.
In year 2019, Gal dedicated to Zlatko a double album called From drums 2 piano in thanks for musical knowledge gained by him.
In 2005 a colleague from Kombo Anže Kristan invited Gal to join the group Perkakšns. The Perkakšns Group was formed in 2001 in Litija. They are a percussion group wich performs mostly African music but also had many other diverse musical projects. They have performed a lot in Slovenia and sometimes abroad. Until now they've released one CD. Gal casually cooperates with them from what he joined. In 2013, they were honored by the setting up of a private workshop for them by the great master of African drumming Thomas Guei.
Between 2010 and 2019, Gal Furlan, among other projects, also participated in Mojo hišni band, Antioksidanti, Fish on Mars and Nesesari Kakalulu.
In 2010 Gal joined the group Mojo hišni band, which formed from jam sessions in the Mojo cafe bar in Ročinj. Their music is mostly bluess and rock. Due to the colorful musical diversity of members and musical elements they combine, they named their music (genre) "esperanto blues". During these years they had quite a few gigs. In April 2015 they released their first CD entitled Esperanto blues. He participated in the project from year 2010 - April 2018.
In 2013 he joined as a drummer the already existing band Antioksidanti from the surroundings of the town of Ajdovščina. As a group, they started in 2009. Antioksidanti are one of the most active young rock groups of Ajdovščina. So far they have won several awards at various music competitions. In January 2015 they released their first album titled Parum in plastika (Perfume and plastic). He participated in the project from year 2013 - 2017.
In middle of 2014 Gal was invited to collaborate with guitarist Renato Brainich and bass player Goran Štefanec. They began to create progressive music and named their trio Fish on Mars. Beginning of 2017 brought them their first album with title My hungry ghosts. Four more singles were recorded after the album. The last two singles that Gal recorded in collaboration with the band were produced by well-known Slovenian producer Andrea Flego. Gal participated in the project from year 2014 - May 2019.
At the end of 2015, as a percussionist on Congons and Djembe, Gal was invited to colaborate with group named Nesesari Kakalulu. At the beginning of their meetings, the group had a lot of influence from great Nigerian saxophonist and composer Fella Kuti. The musical genre they perform is mostly funky - afro beat. So far they have performed on quite a few concert venues, including In music festival. They've released their first album and first presentation of it happened at the Ment Festival 2018. With group he also recorded their second album called Gospa Gertrude. He participated in the project from year 2015 - 2019.
He marked his twentieth anniversary of regular musical activity with project called Tišina je spregovorila. He made his first presentation in the hall of the First Slovenian Government in Ajdovščina. Project includes a book and solo album.
As indipendent drummer and percussionist, he co-operates with various projects and as a guest recordes in studio for various musicians.
He likes to participate in projects of improvised music or free jazz music. One of the most interesting and challenging experiences is when musicians gether together on the stage, perhaps as a group for the first time in their life, and with improvisation at a given moment they say something unique and unrepeatable.
During the years he recorded in various studios and rooms, which are also intended for this purpose: ZKD Točka, Nova Gorica / Music school, Nova Gorica / Radio Slovenija, Studio 14 / Studio PLC, Goriška Brda / Klub Baza, Ajdovščina / Lotos music studio / Radio Študent / Studio Klopotec / Hiša kulture, Šmartno / Prosdocimi recording studio / Klub Štala, Lokavec.
Over the years, he has visited various occasional music workshops, conducted by: Francesco Cusa, Nino Mureškič, Giovanni Maier, Evan Parker, Ab Bars, Thomas Guei, Michael Moore, Han Bennink ect.
He performed many times at dance, theater and literary performances and has often performed at all kinds of art exhibition openings. He is currently creating new music with different groups. However to those who are interested he is willing to pass the knowledge on. For some time in 2013 and 2014 he taught Djembe in Mc hiša mladih Ajdovščina, KŠTM Vrtojba and ZKD Točka in Nova Gorica and in the years 2018 and 2019 at ŠENT in Nova Gorica.
On the set of drums and djembe he teaches individually as well.
From 2013 he has also been involved in sound therapy. He performes meditative ''sound baths'', group or individual, out side or at home.
From October 2015, Gal Furlan is self-employed in culture.
In March 2018, Gal Furlan founded the Kussa Cultural Art Society with his mother, his wife and her father. On March 28, 2018, they opened the gate of the Club Štala. The club is in the renovated about 500 years old barn, which stands next to the already existing Forging Museum Michael Cussa, in Lokavec near Ajdovščina. The society has the intention of organizing events such as musical performances, art exhibitions, art workshops and the like.
